Location Pictures and explanations

One of our locations was a forest. We decided to use one of our locations as a forest because we found that we could do a lot with this one specific location and we could portray it in so many different ways with the help of using different props, makeup and costume. One way we used it was to show our artist was happy and content, whilst singing the song however we flipped this around and used it to show how she was trapped and isolated from the world and we found that a forest would show this in the perfect way.
Another location that we used was a lake/ river. We used this as this location fitted with our lyrics of the song for example "Still waters run deep" so too connote this we found that a lake or a river would be perfect to show this. Again similar to the forest we could use this in a variety of ways, but mainly using it for the still waters.
This last one is not a specific location however we thought that by doing a time-laps of the sky or sunset would compliment our locations and our song. Our song is a relatively slow song and so by doing a time-laps at the start we thought it would set the scene of the music video nicely and it would also start to give the audience an incite of the music video without giving too much away, so they are starting to guess and think about the music video which is what we want.

Analysis of Other Students Videos

What i like about this music video is the great use of location and appropriate mise-en-scene. They obviously took great care in what was in the frame of the shot. My favourite aspect of the music video is the time lapse of the sky as well as the lightening used for when the character was performing.

I like the use of costume and location in this video especially the tunnel location.

I feel this video uses a variety of effective locations but could do with more of a narrative or concept to the music video. Also they could of added aspect of performance to see who actually sings the song and interact with the audience more.

My favourite aspect of this music video is the lip synching which is very good as well as the use of costume and mise en scene is obviously well thought through.

Interim Evaluation

This week we have been experimenting with mise en scene and creativity shots. We completed this to see how we could incorporate creative and different types of shots we could use in our music video.
We also used a prop in the research for our music video, this helped us test out different ways of showing importance of a prop. We found it very hard to figure out a way of using a rubix rube in a creative and different way but still show importance. I feel that some of the photos we shot were very effective and they really helped us in planning our music video.
We have also been practising lip syncing this week on Final Cut Express which we think has been very effective and helpful with the planning of our music video.

Record Label and Logo

Here I have created a range of different logos for our record named Shollia. I used Logomakr.com to create these logos.
Its a label that signs a range of different artists from all different genres of music. We choose to stick with the classic monochrome theme as it makes it look more professional.

Radio 1 Chart and MTV Awards Research

Radio 1 Charts

From looking at the Radio 1 chart, i have found that most of the songs in the top 40 our of the indie pop or Rap/Pop genre. i feel that because our song i in a similar genre as of most of the songs in the top 40 our song may become popular with this audience as it is of a similar genre and music taste.

This helps in our research and planning as this is our target audience and helps us base our song on the charts. I also looked at the Indie single top 40 charts, this showed me that most indie songs that are popular at the moment are

MTV Awards

From these results I can see that majority of the nominees and the winner of the best video of the year are from the performance or spectacle genre. This shows that spectacle and performance are the best genres of music video as they engaging with the audience.

Taylor Swift - Bad Blood music video uses a lot of clever camera angles and special effects. The genre is image and spectacle, I think the Bad Blood music video won the video of the year as it had a lot going on and kept the audience gripped, it also starred a lot of well known celebrities making people want to watch it again to spot the famous people for example, Ellie Goulding.

The winner of the best editing was Beyonce '7/11' This video features many creative shots making the video very interesting when the location is only a hotel room. The editing is face pace and in time with the beat, i feel like this is very effective. I would like to use this in our video as i feel that it is very effctive and editing to the beat of our music could add a lot of interest and appeal in our video.

Choice of you tube strategies for promotion to audience

Analysis of 3 music videos - What works well?

The first Music video is Beyonce - 7/11. This Music video is editied to the beat of the music and is very fast pace. there are some cleaver editing techniques in this such as the rewind techniques when Beyonce falls off the chair and then the effect of the rewind puts her back in the chair, this is a very interesting effect. This video won best editing the year it was created.

The second Music video is Skrillex and Diplo - "Where Are Ü Now" with Justin Bieber. this music video i think is the better compared to beyonce 7/11 as i think that is it more creative and is more interesting. the use of the green screen to create the colours and drawings in the background looks really good and suits the beat of the song. it also makes the video unique. the us of time laps is also different and interesting.

The third music video is nicki minaj "starships". in the beginning of this video there is a clip of a flying spaceshp which is obviously edited in. this is effective as it goes with the theme of the song. also the locations and backgrounds have all been colour enhanced through editing and also lots of vibrant colours have been used. they have used real locations and put effects and filters over the top of the footage.  there is also a colydiscope effect in the music video which fits well with the theme of starships and aliens as it has a filter and looks a little bit like it is from out of space.

From looking at the three Music videos and seeing what we could use in our music video is the use of the green screen and the fast editing to the beat of the music will be very effective in our music video. We could also use the filters over the top of the footage in our music video.

MES creativity

I think these two pictures are the most creative because firstly, the image on the right is creative because it is not just a long shot, which is very boring, there is legs there and the shot is through the legs so makes you see it from a different perspective. The image on the left is creative because it is an unique shot but because it is from high above looking down shows more of what is happening in the picture, this also gets the feeling of the girl is trapped and the high lighting emphasizes that she is just lying there, almost lifeless.
I think that this image is not as creative as the ones above because the attention to lighting has not really been thought about and the shot needs to either be lower or higher, it is just more of a boring shot rather than creative.

Mise - en - Scene Creativity

We thought that this image was the most effective as it was intresting and the angle of the camera was different. also the prop was balancing at a differet angle and not just flat on the ground looked like it could be floating on the grass.

Editing Practise - Hollie and Shauna

Creative ideas for storyboards

From doing this task we have looked at different types of ideas by story boarding and how they can effect the planning of our music video. We picked the Drama studio for our location as it is dark and isolated. the benifit of the drama studio is that is is a blank canvas and so we can mold it to the idea that we want to convey for example being trapped and alone or being over crowded. This lead on to our other idea was being trapped. we could use the curtian of the drama studio to feel trapped and isolated. Black and White is a simple yet effective editing technique, it creates a mood and can show different emotions. The rubix cube is a very unique thing to be able to do and could also convey isolation

Analysis of Media Language and Director's Creativity

Audience Exceptations of Music Video and Interview

  1. What do you expect from an indie pop music video?
  2. Do you think and indie pop music video would be fast or slow?
  3. Do you expect the music video to be in one location or a number of locations?
  4. Do you think there should be scenes of performance in the video?
  5. Lot of people or just a single character featured in the music video?
  6. What sort of props would you expect to see in an indie pop music video?

Todorov's Theory

These images show an idea of our music video, using the basics of Todorov's theory.

Todorov's theory is that most of the story or plot goes in the same pattern or follows along the same path. This pattern follows along three stages which are equilibrium, disruption and resolution. Equilibrium is the first part of the pattern which is where everything in the story is happy, all good and everything is as it should be for example in our story our main character is all happy and everything is all good with her friends and family.
The second part of the story is the disruption which is where something in the story will go wrong and the happiness will be destroyed. In our story everything starts to go wrong and our main character starts to have arguments with her friends and family a she starts to be isolated from everyone and everything. This is the final part of the story where things start to get better again and a resolution is found. In our story the resolution is that our main character starts to talk to people and tell people that she is struggling and so people can help her. She is helped and  equilibrium is restored.

Research into vlogs with Audience Analysis

Vlogs are blogs but in a style of visuals and video created by an artist/You-tuber. They can involve the artist just filming their day and what they are getting up to or them recording a new song/album to promote themselves.

For example the band 5SOS (they produce a music in the pop genre) created video diaries while they were on tour in London. This is a great way of the artist to connect with their fans and inform them with information about future plans and music being released.

Another example is Troye Sivan (who creates music of the indie genre) who is currently using vlogs to announce his new album as well as releasing his new songs and music videos on this website. Again this is an easy way to give a message to his fans and views directly.

These artists that making these vlogs are targeting the same audience as we are with Jasmine Thompson as an artist. The artists that are putting these vlogs up directly through social media are directly connecting with their audience and keeping them updated with the process of what they are creating or releasing. This ensures that the audience know exactly what they are up to and they know when their music is available to download and buy. Vlogging also connects the audience and the artist on a more intimate level, as it comes across as just having a chat with a friend. Involving the audience more, may increase the amount of people interested in the artist.

Vlogging is also another way of getting the audiences opinion on things. for example when they release there single, if the audience want to see the artist live.

Blumler and Katz

Blumler & Katz Theory is called uses and gratifications, which asks the question of why do people consume media?
They found that the four most common things that the audience uses for the media are:

  • finding out about relevant events and conditions in immediate surroundings, society and the world
  • seeking advice on practical matters or opinion and decision choices
  • satisfying curiosity and general interest
  • learning; self-education
  • gaining a sense of security through knowledge Personal Identity
  • finding reinforcement for personal values
  • finding models of behaviour
  • identifying with valued other (in the media)
  • gaining insight into one's selfIntegration and Social Interaction
  • gaining insight into circumstances of others; social empathy
  • identifying with others and gaining a sense of belonging
  • finding a basis for conversation and social interaction
  • having a substitute for real-life companionship
  • helping to carry out social roles
  • enabling one to connect with family, friends and societyEntertainment
  • escaping, or being diverted, from problems
  • relaxing
  • getting intrinsic cultural or aesthetic enjoyment
  • filling time
  • emotional release
  • sexual arousal

  • For our Music Video we will be using Blumler and Katz Theory of entertainment as we feel that their explanation for why audiences watch and use media fit our task and what we are trying to achieve with our video well.  People watch music videos to be entertained, to fill time or relax and so with creating a music video we are trying to make sure our audience enjoy it.

    Media pitch audience feedback

Whilst we were pitching to our peers, they were evaluating our ideas and music video pitch. The results from this are shown from the pictures above.  We got them to write three points on how we could improve on our initial ideas and our pitch. One common point that the audience commented on was what specific lighting we had and what type of editing we would have used. This was all useful as it got us to think about different elements in our music video that we had not thought about, to improve our music video.

    Interim Evaluation

This week, we have been annotating and analysis our songs lyrics.

We our analysis the lyrics of "Drop You Guard" as this will help us to know what to put in the music video. For example, The lyrics our ".. those paper dolls hold each other by the hand.." we are think of doing a stop motion of two paper dolls coming into the screen, holding hands. This connects the visuals with the lyrics.

Using a wordle, which you put all the lyrics into i and it comes out with the most used words. We found that the most used words were; darkness, guard, deeper, hard, runs, deep, sea, emotion.
From things we are going to include in our music video darkness and also the use of water and sea is mentioned alot so we are going to try introduce that through the video. We are also hopefully going to portray a lot of emotion through the actor onto the music video. This will hopefully make the audience more engaged in the video.

I think this week has been very effective in the research and planning of our music video, as we have decided the genre of the music video along with what we want to come across to the audience through the camera.

    Pitch Plan

    binary opposits levi strauss drawings

These photos are of drawings of binary opposites that I have done to help us get an idea of what we could put in our music video.

    Wordle + Lyric Annotation

This is our wordle that we did so that we could have a look at what words in our lyrics would stand out the most so we could get a better idea of what to base our music video against.

We annotated the lyrics of our song, this gave us an idea of what we may feature in our music video. We found that the most commonly used words in the lyrics are emotion, deep and run. This helps us to link the lyrics with the visuals we may use in the music video.

Records  and Polydor Records Additionally, the label has achieved 7 top 10 U.S. albums since 2006.

    Interpritations of genre through editing

The muic video this still would come from would be from a classical music genre. i used an effect called reduced banding to create an black and white emotional setting. i feel that this creates a clam setting yet shows emotion. the mise-en-scene shows someone playing a piano, a piano which associated with classical music.

    Case study of ionic Direcotrs

Michel Gondry: Director Michel Gondry's remarkable creative energy and ability to innovate have resulted in some of the most visually stunning music videos in the history of the time, and his wild imagination and organic, childlike imagery raised the bar of what one could achieve in the short format. In particular, his technique of placing numerous cameras around a subject and combining the images to form a visually astonishing sweeping effect has become very popular.
From looking at his Music videos such as "Everlong"- foo fighters and "like a rolling stone' - the rolling stones. ~ From looking at both of these videos they both have similarities such as both the videos uses cleaver editing techniques that look like the character in the video is in a dream or looking back in time. Using these cleaver editing techniques such as saturation in the foo fighters video in the beginning and the the time laps in the rolling stones video show the audience a different perspective and communicate that something isn't normal and makes the video more intresting to the audience. In the foo fighters video "everlong" the audience have to follow the character an his flashbacks and also other characters flashback which allows the audience to work harder and pay more attention to the video. Michel uses lots of jump cuts and having the real world part of the couple sleeping in bed in black and white and the dream part in colour and also adding effects to make it seem more unrealistic. The narrative of the video is about a couple who's dreams get connected and the villains in the dream are also the band mates. both the video and the editing is unconventional but the theme fits the effects of the editing.

"Like a rolling stone" by The Rolling Stones has lots of different editing techniques such as super emposing which gives the video a unrealistic feel to it. This is shown in the video of the main charcater the girl always having a blurred and out of focus aura around her at all times. this shows to the audience that she is perhaps seeing the world in a odd way or she has take something to give her these allusion. it is a very cleaver editing technique which is again quite unconventional. another effect used i this music video is called view morphing which is where the camera pans across a still object or person which gives the effect of time being still but you the audience are still moving. it also makes the shot distorted and along with  the panning shots makes the video look unnatural.

Michel Gondry has a very unique take on the world and i feel that he uses it to create theses very imaginative yet unconventional ideas for music videos even though the videos and effects are unconventional they work really well and his work definitely stands out.
